Spring Valley Hospital and its freestanding emergency department are the first two medical facilities in Las Vegas to earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Stroke Association’s® Heart-Check mark for two specialized stroke designations: Certified Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center (TSC) for Spring Valley Hospital and an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital (ASRH) for the ER at Blue Diamond.
This means that we make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. To earn certification, stroke centers must show that they comply with strict standards, clinical practice guidelines and performance measurement criteria. To stay certified, stroke centers continue to comply with standards and must pass regular on-site reviews.
Spring Valley Hospital also earned the 2023-2024 U.S. News & World Report High Performing Hospitals for stroke, which recognizes commitment to a higher standard of care for stroke. Hospitals that earned a high performing rating from U.S. News & World Report were significantly better than the national average.

What Is Stroke?
Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked or stopped. Within a few minutes of a stroke, brain cells begin to die. According to the Centers of Disease Control, stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the U.S. It is also a major cause of adult disability.
BE FAST
Think you or a loved one is experiencing a stroke? Minutes matter to save brain tissue! The American Stroke Association® recommends that you BE FAST:
B ALANCE – Does the person have a sudden loss of balance or coordination?
E YES – Has the person lost vision in one or both eyes or have they had sudden double vision?
F ACE – Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A RMS – Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S PEECH – Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is it slurred or strange?
T IME – Time is critical! If you see any of these signs, call 911 immediately.

Advanced Imaging Technology
The Stroke Response Team at Spring Valley Hospital is prepared to evaluate and treat patients with stroke emergencies. The team includes emergency physicians and nurses, neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiologists, registered nurses, therapists and case managers. They work together to provide quality stroke care.
Rapid stroke diagnosis is essential for preventing further damage and enhancing patient recovery. That’s why the Stroke Response Team uses advanced imaging technology, including:
Cerebral Computed Tomography (CT) Scan
The first and most important test after a stroke to help doctors find out if a stroke is ischemic or hemorrhagic. A CT scan helps show bleeding in the brain via a series of X-rays.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scan
An MRI can show the amount of damage to the brain and help predict recovery. An MRI uses a magnetic field and radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body. It gives information that cannot be seen on an X-ray, ultrasound, or CT scan.
Spring Valley Hospital is one of the few hospitals in Las Vegas using 3T-MRI technology for neurology and stroke patients. This technology creates higher-quality detailed images with fewer contrast injections and reduced procedure time. A large field-of-view fits a variety of body sizes, shapes and conditions.
Cerebral Vascular Angiography
This helps lay the groundwork for stroke treatment. During this minimally invasive procedure, images of the blood vessels in the brain are taken. An angiogram helps locate blockages that cause ischemic stroke.
It also identifies aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (a tangle of arteries and veins) that cause hemorrhagic stroke. Our interventional lab offers dual-purpose biplane technology for clot busting procedures.
Stroke Treatment
Within hours of initial diagnosis, patients are given a personalized plan. Patients receive care in units dedicated to stroke care. There, they receive the medical attention needed for the best possible outcome.
Patients also get support for the physical, emotional and lifestyle issues related to stroke. We help stroke survivors continue on their road to recovery. Inpatient rehabilitation, including specialized neurological therapy services, is available.
